Youth as the Key to Advancing Education in Eastern Indonesia

In an online discussion titled “Youth and the Advancement of Education in Eastern Indonesia”, organized by the Sabua Foundation on Sunday, May 10, Sunarman Sukamto, Special Staff to Deputy V for Political, Legal, and Strategic Human Rights Affairs at the Presidential Staff Office (KSP), emphasized that youth are the cornerstone for accelerating educational equity in Eastern Indonesia.

The discussion, which also featured Haris Pertama, Chairman of the National Youth Committee (KNPI), highlighted the critical role of youth in shaping the future of education in Indonesia. According to Sunarman, the government considers youth as its strategic partner. With their energy and role as agents of change, young people can drive meaningful transformations in society, particularly in the field of education.

Education as a Cornerstone of Nation-Building

Education is one of the most strategic sectors for nation-building. Its significance is reflected in the Constitution, which mandates the largest allocation of the national budget (APBN) to education. Since Indonesia’s independence, the nation has upheld a vision to “enlighten the life of the nation,” making education a cornerstone of social and national sustainability.

“Education occupies a vital position in national development. Its importance is reflected in its substantial allocation in the national budget, the largest among all sectors,” Sunarman stated.

However, he acknowledged that Indonesia still lags behind other countries in educational achievements, including nations that once regarded Indonesia as a role model. This stagnation is particularly evident in Eastern Indonesia, often described as a marginalized and underdeveloped region.

Shifting Priorities for Education in Eastern Indonesia

In recent years, the government has shifted its focus to prioritize the development of educational infrastructure in Eastern Indonesia. These initiatives aim not only to improve infrastructure but also to enhance the quality of educators and encourage active community participation, especially among youth.

“I believe the enthusiasm of youth can be directed towards synergizing efforts to advance education in Eastern Indonesia,” Sunarman said.

He further praised the vision of the Sabua Foundation, which was initiated by young people from Eastern Indonesia, and encouraged them to maximize their contributions. Sunarman also extended his support for future innovations and initiatives, urging the public to report challenges or concerns through the government’s platform lapor.go.id.
