In an online discussion titled “Youth and the Advancement of Education in Eastern Indonesia”, held by the Sabua Foundation on May 10, 2020, Sunarman Sukamto, Special Staff to Deputy V for Political, Legal, and Human Rights Affairs at the Presidential Staff Office (KSP), emphasized that youth are the key to accelerating educational equity in Eastern Indonesia.
During the discussion, which also featured Haris Pertama, Chairman of the National Youth Committee (KNPI), Sunarman highlighted that the future of education in Indonesia lies in the hands of its youth. He underlined that youth are strategic partners for the government. With their enthusiasm and role as agents of change, they have the power to drive significant societal changes, particularly in education.
“In my view, the enthusiasm of young people can be directed towards synergizing efforts to advance education in Eastern Indonesia,” Sunarman stated.
The Strategic Role of Education in Nation-Building
Education holds a pivotal role in nation-building. As mandated by the Constitution, education receives the largest portion of the state budget compared to other sectors. From its inception, Indonesia has envisioned an educated society as essential for the sustainability of the nation.
However, the reality reveals that Indonesia lags behind in this sector compared to other countries. Eastern Indonesia, in particular, is often perceived as a marginalized and underdeveloped region, further highlighting the urgent need for focused attention.
The Role of Youth in Educational Equity
The government has begun shifting its focus toward prioritizing educational infrastructure in Eastern Indonesia. Beyond physical development, this initiative includes improving the quality of educators and fostering active community participation, particularly among the youth.
Sunarman expressed his appreciation for the vision of the Sabua Foundation, initiated by youth from Eastern Indonesia. He also pledged full support for their innovative efforts to contribute to educational advancement. Furthermore, he encouraged the public to report any challenges or issues through the government’s lapor.go.id platform.
